Métis History Project
We are well into the project with only a month to get your pictures and content in if you wish. We are seeking more pictures if you have them out there. So do not be shy and email or mail some pictures we may be able to use. Our aim is to have this book produced by this fall.
- 1960s: Dené people said that they did not surrender their interest in traditional lands.
- 1970s: Committee for Original People's Entitlement, Indian Brotherhood of the Northwest Territories, Métis Association of the Northwest Territories and the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada are formed.
- 1976: The Dené submit their self-government proposal after Métis withdraw from the joint proposal to the Government of Canada. The Dené and Métis negotiate separately for five years.
- Early 1980s: The Dené and Métis come together to negotiate a land claim.
- September 1993: The Sahtú Dené and Métis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement is signed. Through the terms of the agreement, the Sahtú Dené and Métis have the right to negotiate self-government on a community-by-community basis.
- 1995: Government of Canada introduces the Inherent Right of Self-Government Policy. It allows negotiations for self-government agreements in Canada and the Northwest Territories to begin.
- November 1996: Déline Land Corporation submits a formal proposal to begin self-government negotiations.
- January 1997: Negotiation of a self-government framework agreement with Deline begins.
- October 1998 _A PSA for negotiating a self-government agreement for the community of Déline is signed. The PSA sets out topics and a schedule for self-government negotiations. The AIP is negotiated over the following five years.
- January 2000: EMLC holds a strategic planning session in Norman Wells. Strategic objective #3 of the planning session states: "The Board must take the initiative in negotiating a self-government agreement with the federal and territorial governments."
- August 2003: Deline, GNWT and Canada sign-off on the Deline self-government AIP. Final self-government agreement negotiations begin.
- April 25, 2002: Tulita writes letter the Minister of INAC requesting that a self-government table be set-up. Minster agrees three months latter.
- September 2004: Tulita, GNWT and Canada sign-off on the Tulita self-government framework agreement.
- January 2005: EMLC writes letter to the Minister of INAC requesting that a self-government table be set-up. Minister agrees three months later.
- June 2005: Funding proposals sent into INAC in support of self-government negotiations (framework agreement).
- August 2005: Federal government commits to funding EMLC $210,000.00 to start-up negotiations. More funds are promised if they come available. Work begins on tasks set-out in funding proposal work-plans.
- September 7, 2005: EMLC Chief self-government negotiator and resource person meet with EMLC board in Norman Wells to plan for October start-up negotiations.
- November 7, 2005: Start-up Framework Negotiation session in Norman Wells. Negotiators leave table with Draft 3 of a Framework Agreement.
- December 12, 2005: Continue Framework negotiations to achieve a Negotiators Agreement-in-Principle.
- June 2007: Self-Government Framework Agreement formally signed in Norman Wells.
