SELF-GOVERNMENT FAQ

Our goal is to protect our language, culture and heritage, and to create independence and economic prosperity for Norman Wells Land Corporation / Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Government participants of the SDMCLCA. We will achieve our goal by pursuing maximum authority in all jurisdictions of governance and by creating and developing a land base on which a modern and traditional economy can thrive.

The Sahtú Dené and Métis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement, which was signed by our Leaders in 1993, ratified and provided Chapter 11, Capital Distribution. This clause in the Land Claims Agreement identifies how individual Land Corporations like the Norman Wells Land Corporation / Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Governmentmay provide for it its Members.

The Norman Wells Land Corporation / Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Government, the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories are currently negotiating self-government. The activities that are to be carried out by the Norman Wells Self-Government Negotiating team are identified in our Sahtu Dene and Metis ~ Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.

The Norman Wells Self-Government Negotiating Team is responsible for:

  • Negotiating the best deal for the beneficiaries, under the direction of the Board of Directors
  • Encouraging beneficiary awareness and support for self-government negotiations
  • Encouraging non-beneficiary awareness of the progress of self-government negotiations

Self-Government will provide the Norman Wells Land Corporation / Tłegǫ́hłı̨ Got’įnę Government beneficiaries with the ability to make decisions at the community level, which will better address the needs of beneficiaries and residents. There is broad and strong support for the establishment of Aboriginal self-government in the North West Territories.
